These
are the Microbial Metabolism Lecture materials of the Virtual Microbiology Classrooms (8-week & 16-week). The resources below are used to supplement actual
college microbiology courses.
Understand difference between catabolism / anabolism and what these reactions have to do with metabolism.
Understand what a redox reaction is and what this type of reaction has to do with metabolism.
Understand what ATP is and its significance in metabolism.
Understand the steps of aerobic cellular respiration to the detail that we discussed in class (starting molecule, end product molecule, what is produced in each pathway or subpathway. You do not need to know the name of every molecule at every substage of these processes).
Understand how aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration and fermentation differ.
Understand how metabolism relates to the differential aspect of MacConkey's and Mannitol Salt specialized media.
Printing: The best way for students to print out the PowerPoint Show is to download the PDF version. Select Print, and, when the Print screen comes up, go to the Print Handling options. Under Page Scaling, select "Multiple pages per sheet". Under Pages Per Sheet, select "2". This uses up less paper, placing two slides on each page.
This assignment will help reinforce your understanding of the relationship between differential media and microbial metabolism. This same assignment is featured under the Microbial Metabolism and Microbial Growth & Metabolism lectures.
The Microbial Metabolism Lecture materials include:
list of learning objectives
PowerPoint lecture
homework assignment
practice test & review questions
relevant microbiology images
The differential aspect of
Mannitol Salt Agar is based on microbial metabolism. Bacteria that can ferment the sugar-alcohol mannitol change this medium from pink to bright yellow.
How to Interpret Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) Specialized
Virtual Microbiology Classroom provides a wide range of free educational resources including PowerPoint Lectures, Study Guides, Review Questions and Practice Test Questions.
